WebSlowly, a visual of the ocean’s floor emerged. And it wasn’t flat. The data showed that the ocean floor was filled with ridges, valleys, mountains ranges and deep gorges. Even more, Marie’s map showed a deep valley, or rift, ran the length of the Atlantic Ocean and cut the ocean in half, where one continental plate ended and another began. WebMarie Tharp was always fascinated by the ocean. Taught to think big by her father who was a mapmaker, Marie wanted to do something no one had ever done before: map the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Was it even possible? Not sure if she would succeed, Marie decided to give it a try.

Working with data collected by Bruce Heezen, Tharp drew the first detailed global maps of the ocean floor. Her first was a map of the North Atlantic bottom in 1957. WebMarie's map of the Indian Ocean was published as a panorama in National Geographic in 1977. The famous World Ocean Floor Panorama, painted by Heinrich Berann, was published in 1977. It was based on 25 years of Marie Tharp's work throughout the oceans.
