Pokemon is a graphical game and the only way to provide appropriate feedback for hitting a Pokemon is through animation. From the attack to the flinching, this is undoubtedly one of the most valuable parts of Pokemon.

Then, once they start, press the + key on the numpad (or whatever you set it to in the mod config) while looking at one of the npcs to open up the menu which allows you to change their position and everything else, like you would automatically get when its PC/NPC.
