I use a 3'x4' rubber backed carpet as a magic carpet to chain up, then I can put it down in the trailer for gearing up.

This area traps water and in my case, salt water, and rotted out the metal in less than 2 years. So, whatever you decide to go with, needs to run over this gap so the whole thing is wash down capable.
