If you got a gargoyle halberd from the gargoyles boss, use it instead; it's got slightly better base damage, so it's generally slightly more effective. If you didn't, you'll get one when you're about halfway through the game, at which point you might not be as interested in upgrading it. The halberd is a quality weapon.
