WebJul 15, 2005 · Connective-tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a matricellular protein that enhances TGF-β/Smad signaling by transcriptional suppression of Smad-7 (Wahab et al., 2005). Although CTGF has a minimal basal expression level in normal skin, it is transiently upregulated after dermal injury (Sisco et al., 2008). CTGF is a heparin-binding 38-kDa cysteine-rich peptide that induces proliferation, collagen synthesis, and chemotaxis in mesenchymal cells ( 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ) and has been shown to potentiate sustained fibrosis when injected along with TGFβ in an acute animal model ( 19 ).
