WebThe Etudes are a tossup. I find Liszt can build a grander texture with just the piano, but Chopin has more inner voicings and more fleshed out melodies. Aside from his chromatic octave spam pieces, Liszt uses octaves really well. I find Chopin's Octave Etude kind of 'meh' after hearing Mazeppa, or the climax of the Eroica Etude.
